Mid-August: North Palm Beach. Chris's parents Cal & Donna Brand visit and assist in the assembly of the rig: hours of tedious measuring, whipping, lashing and zip-tying the sail and battens. Unfortunately, they had to leave before the joyous first sail.
August 26th: North Palm Beach. Departure day, Bruce and Barb Petterson joined us for the first portion of the trip. We took some pictures, Bruce got to sail Ginger with her new rig, and then we let them off at the beach just south of the Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach.
August 27th: Key Biscayne. Lessons learned about using Root, the dinghy: when embarking or disembarking among algae-slick rocks move carefully and be patient. Despite her dunking Kimberly managed to keep the costly chart kit she was carrying dry!
August 30th: Flamingo & Florida Bay. Pastoral scene belies innumerable relentless mosquitoes at Flamingo. Flamingo Lodge did provide laundry facilities but we decided to leave before the clothes were completely dry...
September 1 & 2: We wound down for a couple of days in Charlotte Harbor, anchored off the northwest side of Pine Island. Our friend Larry Riopelle came for a visit on the 2nd and we took his 11.5 Whaler, the SS Quark, for a brisk tow around the Harbor.
September 3: Charlotte Harbor to Sarasota. Beautiful start to the day. We sail out of the Harbor as the full moon sets and the sun rises. We often had dolphins ride our bow in Florida Bay, but this day was our richest such experience.
September 4th: Sarasota to DeSoto Point. Sharpie schooner Andrasti in Sarasota yacht basin.
The following were taken by Scott Snedeker from the Aquasnort on our way from the Cortez Bridge, through the Anna Maria Bridge and on to our anchorage at DeSoto Point inside the mouth of the Manatee River:
September 5th: DeSoto Point to Apollo Beach. Sailing under the Skyway was slow in a dying morning breeze. There was no need to go through the shipping channel in the center, this is a TALL bridge.

Ginger's bow after
hitting Norman's Cay, 17 Feb. 2002.
Norman's
Cay after Ginger was finished with it.
In
Norman's Pond we careened Ginger first to port and then to starboard
during the intermediate high tide. (22 Feb. 2002)
Root
made a good working platform for Kim as she did the touch-up paint.
Ginger
during reprovisioning in Nassau, Feb 2002. Ugh! Stowing takes more time than
shopping.
We
sailed Ginger right along with the Bahamian racing fleet at Little Farmer's
Cay, Feb 2002.
